Seah Ze lin

Zelin Seah (B.1980) obtained his diploma in Communication Design (majoring in illustration) from The One Academy of Communication Design in 2002, going on to gain a degree in Fine Art from the University of Central England or Birmingham City University in 2007.

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions since 2002. Notable among these include MEA Malaysia Emerging Artist Awards co-organized by HOM, Galeri Chandan and Soka Gakkai Malaysia, and most recently Vertical or Horizontal Exhibition at HOM and Sequential Narrative at Galeri Chandan. In 2010, he was part of the Pudu Community Art Project.

Seah’s works have also been shown in Singapore, Tokyo, and England and interesting commissioned works by the young artist include illustrating and designing the 100% Hands Made 10-year anniversary publication for the Hands Percussion Team, painting Stephen Chow’s portrait for the movie Kung Fu Hustle, and working as a background artist for DC Comics Batman, issues #631, #632, and #633.

He has participated in various competitions and walked away with top prizes at The Annexe Gallery’s Out of Lines Drawing Competition (2008) and the Comic Fiesta Online Art Competition (2007). This year, his works were part of the Manga Division Jury’s selection of recommended works at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival

Aside from being an artist, Zelin has also contributed work to various advertising agencies including M&C Saatchi and Adsell, and he worked as a senior lecturer at The One Academy of Communication Design from 2003 up till recently. This is his first artist’s residency.
Anniketyni Madian

Anniketyni Madian (B.1986) hails from Kuching, Sarawak. She moved to the peninsular to study Fine Art at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in 2010, majoring in sculpture.

As a student, Anniketyni participated in various group exhibitions. This includes Belief and V2 at 360 Development Studio, Kuala Lumpur and a showing of young artists’ works at RA Fine Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2009. Her works were also traveled at an open exhibition in Dakha, Bangladesh the same year.

In 2010, her works were exhibited at various locations around Malaysia’s capital, such as MAP@Publika in Solaris Dutamas, Art Village Gallery in Bangsar, Galeri Chandan in Bukit Damansara, and the National Art Gallery at the heart of the city centre.

Her experience in arts management includes curating for Artspace Gallery in Bangsar and Anniketyni also curated Art Village Gallery’s H20 watercolour exhibition in 2010.

Asides from her artistic practice and other responsibilities, Anniketyni has also kept busy with numerous community-related activities in her adopted state, as well as back home in Kuching. This is her first artist’s residency.

THE X RESIDENCE

The HOM Residency is one of House of MATAHATI’s (HOM) main programmes. It gives young artists the opportunity to work in a studio space during the six-month residency, provides them with basic art supplies, and offers artists-in-residence vital exposure with an exhibition at the end of their residency.

But what happens to the artists once they leave HOM?

This month, HOM answers this all-important question by regrouping the young artists from its past residencies. Spanning seven artists who have participated in residencies between 2008 and 2010, audiences will be treated to a reunion-of-sorts and the chance to gain an insight into what really happens after a residency. The X Residence planned to be opened on April 30, Saturday, 8pm at HOM, Ampang.

“The idea of this exhibition is so we can see what they have been producing since they left the residency, to note their progress, and to see where they are now,” states Bayu Utomo Radjikin, HOM’s director and an established Malaysian artist.

He goes on to explain that the young artists that have been part of the HOM Residency are at a crucial phase in their career – the make-or-break stage – and this exhibition is a bid to chart their professional development, as well as note the value of an artist-residency for young artists.

Among the fray of exhibiting artists, there are committed full-time artists, teachers, and those pursuing further education, and the artworks they produce are equally diverse.

HOM’s exhibition this month strengthens the gallery’s goal of giving a voice to young artists and it will not only be a wonderful experience for audiences to see the latest works and present styles of the seven participating artists, but also how they have posited themselves within Malaysia’s increasingly competitive art scene.

“We want to make sure the outcome of the residencies suit the artists-in-residence,” concludes Bayu.

Catch The X Residence from 30 April to 14 May at House of MATAHATI (HOM), 6A Jalan Cempaka 16, Taman Cempaka, 68000 Ampang, Selangor.
