Figure in a Room by The F Klub

The F Klub was formed in 2007 and is a collective of visual artists linked by a common interest in making figurative arts. ‘F’ is an abbreviation for ‘figure’. Initiated by Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Kow Leong Kiang, Noor Mahnun Mohamed and Shiah Yih Yiing, the purpose is to share knowledge between its members. The initial steps were to organize activities that will increase an understanding, to enhance their artistic skill in human figure, such as regular live drawing sessions. In 2008 artist Chin Kong Yee was invited to join in the fold. 2010 saw Maslin Ramly and Marvin Chan coming on board and the following 2011, Gan Chin Lee and Chong Ai Lei were part of the group. Using figure as a main subject in their visual arts practice, each member has a distinct style in formulating the representation of figure with a varied approach and techniques. Be it realistic, natural or expressive and to narrate stories, metaphors, allegories or just documentations collated from observations and visual studies, creating scenarios in paintings. Currently, all the artists are based in Klang Valley.

The F Klub has been exhibiting annually starting with a show called ‘F1’ at HOM Art Trans, Kuala Lumpur (2009); trailed by ‘Sutra’ at Kamaria, Selangor (2010); ‘Skin’ (2011) and ‘Seated’ (2012) at HOM Art Trans, Kuala Lumpur. ‘Scent of Bali’ at G13 Gallery, Selangor (2013) showcased renderings from drawing sessions that took place in Bali, Indonesia. A trip to Bandung last year also host discussions to go further afield and expand its scope. Future plans will include workshops, collaborative exhibitions regionally and with an outlook to grow, establish and engage F Klub as an entity within the Southeast Asian art landscape in terms of formalising a pool of resource for exchange and dialogue in the flourishing presence of practitioners in figuration.

In conjunction with Gallery Weekend Kuala Lumpur 2017, HOM Art Trans will be exhibiting artworks from Malaysian international artist, Yee I-Lan with an exhibition entitled The Writer’s Portrait Series – A Revisit Showcase. This exhibition is a revisit from her 2004 Writer’s Portrait Series and taken from Yee I-Lan’s artist statement, this series tries to draw an image reflecting a part of her environment that has influenced her; a small collective communal portrait made up of a selection of Malaysian Muslim male writers.

Having launched successfully last year, GWKL returns this December bringing together galleries, institutions, projects and more across Greater KL. The Writer’s Portrait Series - A Revisit Showcase

It is with a great pleasure that we bring your attention to this upcoming exhibition entitled ‘‘The Writer’s Portrait’ Series: A Revisit Showcase” by Yee I-Lann. Previously shown in 2004, this series of digital photograph works is presented this time around as part of a fund-raising project that will cater to MARS’ operational cost.

Focusing on Malaysian Muslim Male art and cultural figures who have in some ways influenced the artist with their powerful and intellectually laden writing works,  I-Lann tries to bring forth the essence of  each subject by fusing their portraits and texts. As a person very much involved in film production sets,  I-Lann applied her skill in composition and design, creating interesting and thought provoking scene for each select personality.

As a Malaysian, Islam is all around me and a part of my life even though I am not Muslim. I have a familiarity with Islam that has come about both through osmosis and direct national policy. I initially felt some trepidation in being a part of this particular exhibition as I have long had a unique Malaysian training of not commenting on religions besides my own. Even though Islam, as the dominant religion in Malaysia, has in many ways shaped the way I live my life, I am uncomfortable about making direct statements about Islam per se as I feel I do not have enough knowledge about the religion. What knowledge or understanding I do have is given to me in speech, action and example by Muslims in my community. I like the idea that in a multicultural society we share a bit of each other, adopt the sensibilities of our neighbours and become more multi dimensional with wider minds. We all reflect the communities we grow up and live in; religion of various denominations is a big part of that heritage.

Rather than address Islam directly, 'The Writer's Portrait' Series tries to draw an image reflecting a part of my environment that has influenced me; a small collective communal portrait made up of a selection of Malaysian Muslim male writers. They are writers with strong public voices that address various socio-political local and personal issues through their works in the form of poetry, lyrics, stories, articles, scripts etc. They are also writers that have a sensibility I admire, that comes from a deep love, respect and understanding of their community as well as an essential critical disposition that questions themselves and their community. Each writer has through their thoughtful deliberations a relationship with their religion and spirituality that permeates their personalities and thus the work they produce.

'The Writer's Portrait' Series hopes to do justice first to the character of the person and secondly, as a series of portraits, help begin to describe the Malaysian Muslim Male, mapping his thought processes, hopes, fears, as well as community responsibilities and concerns through the writer's consciousness.

Siri ‘Potret Penulis’
