The Red Pulley 9AM
Dr. Zakaria Ali | Oil on canvas | 116.8 x 89 cm | 2022 | RM 45,000
In the patio anjung, which I have turned into an open studio, I get the
morning sun direct every morning. The quality of lights differ each
time I pause to ponder. Intensely bright to mildly diffused, landing on
the railings, the pillars, the wall, the chains, the stacks of weights, the
floor, on the canvas, the easel, transforming precious fleeting
moments to a standstill.
cahaya matahari pagi masuk melimpah. Kualiti cahaya itu berbeza
setiap kali aku tersentak renung berterfakur. Cerah terik ke cerah
lembut, ia melimpahi alang terati, tiang, dinding, rantai besi, keping-keping besi, lantai, kanvas, esel, merubah momen-momen syahdu itu
menjadi kekal dalam kesementaraannya.
Halim Grass Cutter
Dr. Zakaria Ali | Oil on canvas | 81 x 81 cm | 2021 | RM 35,000
Halim is a maintenance crew of five in the hills where I domicile,
cutting grass, chopping trees, clearly underbrush, shooing off
monkeys, guarding the night security post. Pathologically unable to
say No, he is been bullied to do work beyond his contracted tasks,
covering for others who take his good-heartedness for granted. The
stark yellow of his front fender suddenly assumes the stature of
nobility that matches fact to symbol.
Halim, anggota krew tapak seramai lima orang di daerah bukit tempat
aku bersarang, memotong rumput, menebang pokok, membersih
semak, menghalau beruk, menjaga malam di pos “security”. Memang
bergabung.
Relax
Dr. Zakaria Ali | Oil on canvas | 89 x 116 cm | 2021 | RM 45,000
We have been married over forty years, raising four boys who
have since grown and left, leaving the two us to continue. She
cleans the veranda, waters the plants, feeds the fish, the cats,
the dogs, then relaxes watching Korean flicks on Netflix,
reclining on the cough in the living room, by the window,
oblivious to the world. Not understanding the language but
follows the story, she is fully engrossed, often in tears, which
tickles me.
berpindah keluar, meninggalkan kami berdua menyambung
sisa usia. Isteri membasuh veranda, menyiram pokok-pokok
bunga, memberi makan ikan, kucing, anjing, kemudian relaks
tengok cerita Korea di Netflik, terlentang di atas sofa di ruang
tamu, sebelah tingkap, alpha dunia sekitar. Tanpa
mengetahui bahasa Korea tapi faham jalan cerita, dia amat
asyik, kerap menintiskan air mata, sehingga hatiku tercuit-cuit.

Imaginasi mengubah wajah dunia.
Masuk studio terus melukis.
Masuk bengkel terus mengukir. Tanpa merujuk/meniru apa-apa imej.
Semuanya adalah hasil dari kekuatan imaginasi.

ISSAREZAL ISMAIL
Issarezal Ismail (b.1978) was born in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Growing
up in an environment close to the sea and mangrove swamps, instilled his love
for nature from a very young age. His relationship with art grew stemmed
from his observations of the interests of his elders, notably his grandfather
who was a carpenter and traditional musician. His passion for art was further
cultivated during his teenage years and further developed when he opted to
take his Bachelor Degree in Fine Art at UiTM Perak in the year of 1996.
After completing his degree, Issa decided to become a lecturer at several
colleges and universities around Malaysia. Currently, he is Senior Lecturer at
the UiTM, Perak Branch in Seri Iskandar. Before relocating to Perak, he had
previously resided in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for almost 5 years where he
completed his PhD.
His works are often inspired by life experiences that he has had in the
environment in which he lives; either it is related to nature, humans or other
socio-cultural phenomena. All of his ideas are usually wrapped in visual
combinations that generally have a surreal effect that is contested by the
reality itself.
ARTIST STATEMENT - ISSAREZAL ISMAIL
Some of the works on display are part of the series THANK YOU FOR THE LESSONS
YOU HAVE TAUGHT ME. It was inspired by personal experiences that I gathered
during my return to Seri Iskandar in the last three years, especially through
conversations and communication with fellow artists, collectors and gallerists
whom I met in various situations and events, both in the physical world and the
virtual world.
Conversations about art and artists, whether it's recalling memories from the past
or current situations are often laced with advice, hints or even reminders about
how one should or shouldn’t do in order to pursue this challenging field.
All the advice and hint were wrapped, opened and composed again through the
representation of my body in various poses together with various subject matter
(nature and man-made objects) to represent and express the world of art / artists
that has two sides. On one hand, it is full of excitement that goes beyond optimism
itself. On the other hand, it is loaded with tests and challenges that are full of
thrills.
I, then painted the visual image on the corrugated board that mounted on the
frame-like board resulting from the paper casting technique. For me, a piece of
paper is really fragile. However, paper that is shredded, crushed and then inserted
into the mold can become very strong result. That is the frame of the world of art /
artist itself; at least for me. I have to accept all of my shortcomings to in order to
gain my strengths in this field.

ARTIST STATEMENT - AZAM ARIS

RUZZEKI HARRIS
Pop Surrealism is the visual conduit used by emerging artist Ruzzeki Harris to
communicate his observations and express his angst concerning the world
around him. Whether touching on events and issues that are more localized to
Malaysia, or broader global phenomena, the raw visceral imagery utilized in
his works resonates with viewers universally.
Inspired by surrealist greats such as Salvador Dali and René Margritte, the
figurative style employed by this artist is quite distinct, and no holds are
barred when conveying a message. Ruzzeki’s works speak directly to the
viewer, without the need for feigned niceties, capturing what artist himself
describes as the “raw emotion of the street” (as stated in the introduction to
his 3rd solo exhibition Point Blank).
Ruzzeki pointedly critiques the many idiosyncrasies he observes using of raw
pop culture iconographies and symbolisms, and their strategic surreal
utilization within his works. Politics, governance, and social behavior are
among the many contemporary subjects that he addresses in his art.

A front liner is a professional who provides essential services. They often regularly
interact with their organizations prospective or current customers. A front liner
represents their company to the public. They can work in a range of industries,
which in this case: healthcare.
Looking back during the covid pandemic period, the front liners plays a major role
during those distressing moment. In my point of view, they are under appreciated.
Being physically fatigued and mentally worn out, drench in their own sweat with
the ‘ppz’ suit on, it is a devastating scenery.
They are the real definition of the true ‘unsung heroes’, as far as I'm concerned,
undebatable. And their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
